The Saskatchewan Arts Board started collecting
artwork by contemporary Saskatchewan artists in 1950 by purchasing
three paintings. Since that time, the Permanent Collection
has grown to over 2,300 works, features more than 580 artists,
and documents the evolution of visual art and artists in Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Arts Board Permanent Collection exists to
integrate Saskatchewan arts into the lives of Saskatchewan
people, to support Saskatchewan artists and to create a cultural
inheritance for the future. It serves to inform, enlighten
and enhance the lives of present and future generations, and
provides a valuable resource of art and archives.

Each year outstanding works by Saskatchewan
artists are acquired through purchase, commission, donation
or bequest. These works are carefully documented and then
made available provincially, nationally and internationally,
to art galleries and museums for public exhibitions through
our loan program. Artworks are also made available to non-profit
organizations, government departments, agencies, crown corporations,
boards, commissions, and the corporate sector through our
popular art rental program.
Works in the collection are carefully preserved and maintained
by professionals. To ensure the ongoing quality of the collection,
a Permanent Collection Advisory Panel provides expertise,
advice, and recommendations to our board.
