Chuck Crate was born in Weston, Ontario. He received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria and worked in the field of Adult Education in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan until his retirement, where he resided in Biggar and Alsask, Saskatchewan.

In his early career as a public school teacher Crate became familiar with collage, for its aesthetic properties as well as its didactic possibilities. He began to employ the technique of collage to create imaginative scenes or landscapes of the imagination.
