About The Artist
Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan in 1970,
Jeff Nachtigall earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University
of Regina in 1993 where he studied printmaking and sculpture.
After one year in the Master of Fine Arts program at Illinois
State University, Nachtigall moved to Calgary where he began
to paint on salvaged materials and explore an automatic, intuitive
style.
Many of Nachtigalls works use animal imagery.
Within this animal imagery, he has created a personal visual
language a set of images that can be read as personal
symbols. He uses an image of a dog to refer to himself
and a simplified, cartoon-like moose to refer to Canada, thereby
pointing to his own cultural identity. Nachtigall likes
to position himself as a cultural observer, responding directly
to issues at hand, from what he hears on the radio, watches
on television or from events of his own life.
