About The Artist
Born in Winnipeg in 1957, Leesa Streifler
currently resides in Regina. She received her Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree at the University of Manitoba in 1980
and her Master of Fine Arts degree from Hunter College, New
York in 1983. After holding several teaching positions
in New York, Streifler began teaching at the University of
Regina in 1986.
She is interested in the effects of the subconscious on the
body and how the mind/body processes intense emotional experience.
Traumas such as loss (through death, illness, or loss
of power), the questioning of gender construction and the
human need for control are ongoing themes in her work.
Streifler explores the difference between photographic and
invented images, playing with the notion of photography
as documentation or evidence of reality and drawing and painting
as fiction or invention.
