About The Artist
Born in Leader, Saskatchewan in 1950,
Margaret Vanderhaeghe resides in Saskatoon. She received
a Bachelor of Arts in Art History in 1971 from the University
of Saskatchewan and then studied drawing and painting there
from 1980 to 1982.
Working as an artist for close to thirty years, Vanderhaeghe
has explored an impressive range of subjects and themes in
her work, particularly those of identity, memory and gender.
Recently known for her abstract paintings with their layers
of paint and heavy textures, she has also been interested
in the human figure and has frequently delved into her own
childhood to produce fascinating narratives on canvas.
She has drawn on her recollections of growing up in the small,
predominantly German community of Leader. Through studying
family letters, papers & documents, Vanderhaeghe has searched
for an understanding of her German agricultural heritage.
She has said that although memory is unreliable, its
invaded by imagination and dreams. A series of
memory-fragments
the theme of roots is of great importance:
links with childhood, family place
culture, all that
is a part of me and all that I remember. One of
her aims is to translate her childhood memories into visual
language.
