With support from the Saskatchewan Arts Board’s Culture on the Go pilot program, Saskatchewan artists are travelling to Rwanda to undertake and document a creative partnership between Saskatchewan musicians and Rwandan recording artists.

Led by Paul Benjamin, a Saskatoon musician and performing artist, this team includes RationaL, a Saskatoon hip hop artist, and Rebecca Gibbons as project coordinator and documentarian (audio, video and web.) The team will travel to Kigali, Kibuye and Butare from September 19 to 28, 2010.

The project builds upon a groundbreaking trip Benjamin took to Rwanda in February 2009. He met a number of people whose lives were horrifically changed by genocide, and who had used and listened to music as a way to mourn and express grief and loss. By returning to Rwanda to meet with and work with communities of new and experienced artists, Benjamin hopes to teach music skills, collaborate on ideas, and help people in Rwanda express themselves creatively.

The Culture on the Go pilot grant program helps make it possible for Saskatchewan artists to further their careers and share their art, music or performances with people in the province and beyond. Touring projects are supported with funding provided to the Saskatchewan Arts Board by the Government of Saskatchewan, through the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport.
