This exhibition is the fifth in a series of artist engagements with the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection. Emerging artist Hilary Knutson uses works from the permanent collection to transform the gallery space into a quasi-domestic interior.

"When faced with the MacKenzie’s collection of over 4,000 artworks, I was drawn to nothing—or more precisely, to no one. Time after time, I found myself staring into a painting, drawing, or photograph with no one in it. There were things, beds, tables, sofas... lamps, chairs, a piano, but no one to use them.

I was lured into the emptiness of these normally inhabited spaces, these portraits of place. To me, they were sets, a conduit for memories. Universal truths: my grandmother’s plastic covered couch; the dining room chandelier; a shelf, laden with books and old family pictures. I was both a voyeur and inhabitant. It was a dream, a house that was not my house.

What you are about to enter is not a gallery; it is a home. Come, and you will see pictures of home, beautiful and compelling work by the likes of Bev Pike, Otto Rogers, Roy Kiyooka and Jana Sterbak. Linger, and you will hear the creaking floor, smell bread baking, and feel the wood fire burning.

Welcome, to my house."
