John Noestheden
b. 1945, resides in Regina, SK

Working freely between sculpture and drawing, Noestheden’s work has strong conceptual inclinations. His overriding concern derives from a personal need to impose order and control while systematically discovering the consequences of sharing either partial or total control. Beauty and control are the unifying elements binding his art practice.

By selecting the images of Ursa Major from an astronomy text, Noestheden surrenders control of the design of the work to an illustration of this star grouping. The sizes and locations of the components are laid out in the diagram. Some control is regained through his interpretation of the forms and their spatial relationships as implied in the charts. Mapping the stars is an ancient practice that delivers its own contingencies or (unpredictability), error and (im)perfection, in the attempt to order nature.
