Emma Lake Sketchbook is a series of 105 panels that were
conceived and constructed during a two-week period at Emma
Lake, Saskatchewan, in August of 2001. The Emma Lake workshops
have played an important role in Saskatchewan art for decades.
Nachtigall took inspiration from this rich history and,
together with his own experiences, produced this body of
work. He set a goal to complete 10 paintings a day, hoping
to have 100 by the end of the workshop. The drawings on
each of the panels are loose and immediate. They incorporate
current events, popular culture, the history of painting
at Emma Lake, and the day-to-day life at the workshop. The
result is an 8 foot by 10 foot narrative that both parodies
and pays tribute to Emma Lake and its colourful history.
