Suzanne Franks
b. 1965, resides in Calgary, AB

Franks explores the relationship between the lure/dream of space travel, disembodiment, ultimate freedom, and the reality of this fantasy - loss, imbalance, and the denial of the weight of our corporeal bodies. Glimmer is a homage to a friendlier version of technology which could inspire, yet disrupts, our extraterrestrial desires/fantasies of travel by illustrating the limitations of our physical bodies and their connection to the earth.

Informed by the theatrical, this visual spectacle of a rocket made out of grommets is used to entice the viewers beyond their physical boundaries. Does the awesome nature of spectacle deny corporeal experience? While the artist incorporates spectacle as a device, to transform the viewer, the installation recalls an empty stage set - objects left behind, like old discarded skins.
