Clearing a Path: An exhibition of traditional Indigenous art. In the past, Indigenous artists have struggled to find ways of expressing their creativity from inside a Western system. When creating art using traditional media such as leather, beads or quills, people often labeled it as craft or handicraft. As a result, the work of Indigenous artists was often regarded as commercial products suitable for tourist shops rather than 'real' art. These kinds of perceptions have restricted the paths opent to traditional artists and have limited the public's ability to appreciate the artistic excellence of this work. Clearing a Path changes these perceptions. The exhibition runs until March 6, 2010 at the RCMP Heritage Centre, Regina. For more information, click here.

A tribute to those we've lost recently.
Ann James - Ann James, nee Siilverstone, died November 1, in the Chelsea and
Westminster Hospital, London, following a surgery for cancer. Although
she spent many years abroad, Ann’s association with Saskatchewan artists,
in particular with the Regina clay scene, was ongoing. A founder of the
erstwhile Hone-James Studio in Regina was followed with her becoming a
principal in the Chelsea Pottery, London. Ann’s unique, critical vision subjectively delivered in her ceramics,
paintings and large-scale hanging sculptures live on in factual
presentations and in the imagination. She was an able teacher of children
and a mentor, friend and inspiration to many Regina artists. Ann’s work
is in many public and private collections across Canada, including the
Saskatchewan Arts Board and the Canada Council Art Bank. Ann will also be remembered for her pointed sense of humour; therefore, all
who knoew her can imagine her amusement on passing on All Saints Day.
Myrna Harris - Craft artist Myrna Harris died August 28 at the age of 75. She will be remembered as one of the founding members of the Saskatoon Pacific Gallery. She began her craft art practice with pottery, then weaving and then felted landscapes. Her artwork, in particular her felfted art, was revolutionary and influenced many textile artists. Her artwork is always a portrayal of a prairie landscape. One of the notable successes is when she received the Premier's Prize for one of her landscapes in 1995.
Manjari Sharma - Sculptor Manjari Sharma passed away February 11, 2009 at the age of 66. Manjari studied at the College of Art in New Delhi, specializing in sculpture, and moved to the US with her husband in 1967. In 1970, the family moved to Saskatoon. Her artistic career flourished starting in 1976 and since then, she had several solo shows and group shows in Saskatoon, Toronto, Regina and Vancouver. One of the founding members of the Prairie Sculptors Association, Manjari became good friend of (late) sculptor Bill Epp who mentored her in bronze casting and casted several of her bronze pieces at his foundry. In 1991 she received a Canada Council Grant to spend time in India and learn papier mache technique of making masks and had a very successful show of her masks at the Saskatchewan Craft Council Gallery in 1994. Mary Sutherland - Bookseller Mary Sutherland, a relentless promoter of Saskatchewan books and writers, passed away February 1, 2009 at the age of 57, following a lengthy illness. Mary had been in the bookselling business since she was a teenager, working in stores in Ottawa, England and New Zealand before managing the bookstore at the University of Regina. She left the bookstore for a period of time to open her own bookstore in downtown Regina called Sutherland Books before returning to University of Regina Bookstore. More
