FAQ
How does the Saskatchewan Arts Board's ArtsSmarts program relate to the one administered by the Saskatoon Foundation?
In the past, the Saskatoon Foundation administered the program in Saskatoon. As of fall 2005, the Saskatchewan Arts Board administers ArtsSmarts grants for the entire province, including Saskatoon.
How do I get program guidelines and an application form?
You can download an application form and guidelines from the Saskatchewan Arts Board web site or call 787-4056 or 1-800-667-7526 and request an application form and guidelines be mailed to you. You can also pick up an application form and guidelines at 2135 Broad Street in Regina .
Who is eligible to apply for ArtsSmarts Saskatchewan grants?
The Saskatchewan Arts Board invites applications from partnerships that include an elementary or secondary classroom, school or a school division; a professional artist, group of artists or a professional arts organization; and a community partner. The community partner may be an arts group, but does not need to be.
How do you define professional artist or arts organization?
Professional artists are artists who have completed training in their discipline, maintain a professional practice, display or present their work through recognized professional organizations, and are paid for their work. A professional arts organization employs or presents the work of professional artists.
Can a teacher be paid as part of this grant program?
ArtsSmarts projects are intended to be integrated into regular classroom activity. A teacher's participation would then be part of his/her teaching duties. If there are exceptional circumstances, such as a teacher who is also an artist taking leave from the classroom to participate as an artist, this should be made clear in the budget.
Why does there have to be a community partner in ArtsSmarts projects?
ArtsSmarts is working to achieve sustainability for arts education for K-12 students and, ultimately, for the arts in society. Community involvement in the arts is essential to achieving these goals. In addition, Saskatchewan is in the midst of an inniative called SchoolPLUS, which promotes a community schools philosophy and encourages schools and communities to work together in educating children and youth.
How do ArtsSmarts projects tie into existing school programs?
Research shows that special projects in schools have more lasting impact if they are integrated into the learning program in the classroom. This means that the project fits into a broader unit of study planned by the teacher, with preparation and follow-up for the project activities. The teacher or teachers work with the other project partners in the planning, and assume responsibility for setting learning objectives and determining where the project fits with curricula in arts education and other subject areas.
Can a school that has had a project apply for that project again?
Although the ArtsSmarts program is not intended to fund ongoing programs, there are certain projects that may need more then one year to develop and evolve. It is also possible that a school or school division might eventually assume responsibility for a program that develops a life beyond ArtsSmarts. We will entertain applications for repeat projects. If you think your project might eventually become an ongoing program, please let the jury know in your application what your plans are for funding in the future (i.e. your sustainability plan).
Are any activities considered ineligible for ArtsSmarts funding?
Although the ArtsSmarts program supports the provincial arts education curriculum by providing a way for schools to bring students and artists together, it is not intended to fund the ongoing teaching of the provincial arts education program in schools. For example, hiring a band instructor to teach band or a dance instructor to teach dance would be ineligible projects. ArtSmarts is not intended for programs that are designed to run year after year. Nor is it intended for the purchase of equipment (i.e. kilns, digital cameras, computers). If you have concerns about eligibility of your project activities, contact the Arts and Learning Consultant.
